The pet industry has made many statements designed to discount and discredit their responsibility for the number of unwanted pets abandoned or euthanased. They have argued that:

  • The number of animals euthanased is insignificant compared to the number of happy and loved companion animals.
  • The animals euthanased in pounds are unsuitable, uncontrollable, have behavioural problems or are sick.

kitten-on-death-row.jpgThis is far from true. The animals in the pound are the hope filled kittens and puppies who will never experience life, they are the dogs who would so dearly love you to tell them they are ‘good’, the ones who never gave up loving people and would forgive their owners in a single wag of their tail. They are the cats just wanting to be held and stroked, the ones who start purring when you walk past their cage. They are the older animals who desperately want the comforts that have been denied them – a warm bed, good food, and the kind words of someone who loves them.

These animals are generally all healthy (illness are usually contracted at the pound through over crowding), and well behaved. Their only failing was the human in their life who abandoned them. Their stories need to be to be told. Their experiences speak louder than our own words as to why this Bill must be introduced.

The Case Studies

In this section we have created a number of case studies focusing on rescued animals. They are designed to refute the claim that these animals are a) insignificant and b) somehow to blame for their circumstances.

Please download them and fax or post them to your MP. New case studies will be added weekly, so please keep sending them off.

If you are a rescuer, or have adopted an animal from a pound or shelter, please download the following form and fill it in with your experiences. Every animal who has been abandoned deserves to tell their story – what they have experienced is proof that our current system needs to be changed.
